Memorial Day is a time to honor the military personnel who lost their lives while serving their country. This list focuses entirely on remembrance and tribute, so I didn’t include any political anti-war tracks.

1. “Arlington” – Trace Adkins

Lyric Sample “There’s a big White House sits on a hill just up the road.”
Written from the point of view of a fallen soldier, “Arlington” describes what it means to be laid to rest at America’s most famous military cemetery, surrounded by others who made the same sacrifice.
2. “The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home” – Justin Moore
Lyric Sample “In a better place up there, but they sure left a hole down here.”
Moore sings about the soldiers who never came home from war, asking listeners to slow down on Memorial Day and actually think about what the holiday means instead of just enjoying the long weekend.
3. “If You’re Reading This” – Tim McGraw

This 1992 country song is a tribute to the ultimate cost of freedom. He uses a conversation with a veteran to remind listeners that every soldier sacrifices something, but many pay with their lives.
7. “Angel Flight” – Radney Foster
Lyric Sample “I love my family and I love this land, but tonight this flight’s for another man.”
An “Angel Flight” is the military term for the mission of flying a fallen soldier’s body home, and Foster’s 2009 song is told from the cockpit of one of those planes.
8. “More Than a Name on a Wall” – The Statler Brothers
Lyric Sample “And he died for God and Country, in a place so far away.”
This 1989 country song is about a mother visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to find her son’s name etched into the stone. It’s really a song about remembering that these people weren’t just soldiers.
9. “Riding With Private Malone” – David Ball
Lyric Sample “And if you’re reading this, then I didn’t make it home.”
Ball’s 2001 hit is about a veteran who restores a 1966 Corvette that belonged to a soldier killed in Vietnam, and later credits that soldier’s ghost with pulling him from a crash.
10. “Soldier’s Last Letter” – Merle Haggard

Lyric Sample “I’m writing this down in a trench, Mom, don’t scold if it isn’t so neat.”
This classic country song is about a soldier’s final letter arriving home after his death, read by a mother who doesn’t know yet that he died in battle. Haggard recorded his famous version during the Vietnam era.
11. “There’s a Wall in Washington” – Iris DeMent
Lyric Sample “They say 60,000 names are etched there in it, in that wall in Washington.”
DeMent’s 1996 folk song is about three people who visit the Vietnam Wall, each touching the same name for a different reason.

This 2001 folk tune is a request on behalf of fallen soldiers, asking that they be welcomed into heaven and given the life they were denied. Gorka based it on a WWII-era poem.
13. “I Drive Your Truck” – Lee Brice

In this 2012 hit, Brice sings about a man who copes with his brother’s military death by driving the truck he left behind. He remembers him through the items left in the glovebox and his programmed radio stations.

14. “Heaven Was Needing a Hero” – Jo Dee Messina
Lyric Sample “I’d have held you, and never let go.”
Written as a general song about losing someone special, “Heaven Was Needing a Hero” is one of the most popular Memorial Day songs today. Messina sang it live at the 2023 National Memorial Day Concert.
15. “The Vacant Chair” – Kathy Mattea

“The Vacant Chair” is about the empty seat left at a family table after a soldier is killed in battle. The Civil War poem that it comes from was written in 1861, making it the oldest source material on this list.

17. “For You” – Keith Urban

Lyric Sample “I wonder, would I give my life, could I make that sacrifice?”
Written for the film Act of Valor, Urban’s song honors active military members and fallen soldiers by naming the freedoms their service protects and the price some of them paid to protect them.
