Why BPM Matters
BPM (beats per minute) tells you how fast or slow a song is. DJs use it to mix tracks smoothly, musicians use it to set their metronome for practice, and producers use it to match samples or build playlists with consistent energy.
Knowing a song’s BPM helps you understand its feel and how it compares to other tracks.
Common BPM Ranges by Genre
- Hip-Hop: 80-110 BPM
- Pop: 100-130 BPM
- House: 120-130 BPM
- Techno: 120-140 BPM
- Drum & Bass: 160-180 BPM
- Ballads: 60-80 BPM
Tips for Accurate Results
- The BPM tap tool resets after 3 seconds of inactivity, so keep a steady rhythm.
- Tapping along for at least 8-10 beats will give the most accurate reading.
- Tap on the strong beats (beats 1 and 3 in 4/4 time) rather than every beat.
- If you get an unusual number, try again. Sometimes doubling or halving the result gives you the true tempo.
- Once you’ve found the BPM, use our Online Metronome to practice playing along at that exact tempo.
