What is “Your Love” About?
Verse 1: The Setup
Josie’s on a vacation far away
His girlfriend Josie is out of town.
This is his window of opportunity to do something he shouldn’t.
Come around and talk it over
So many things that I wanna say
He’s asking another woman to come over, making it sound like it’s just so they can talk.
But he has an agenda beyond conversation.
You know I like my girls a little bit older
She’s older than him, and he’s attracted to that.
This is also a compliment, telling her he’s into her specifically.
Chorus: What He Really Wants
I just wanna use your love tonight
He’s letting her know exactly what he wants: sex, one time.
“Use your love” is a lighter way of saying he wants to sleep with her without any commitment. It’s also a way to say, “I need a stand-in for Josie while she’s on vacation.”
And I don’t wanna lose your love tonight
He doesn’t want her to say no or walk away.
He needs this to happen tonight while Josie’s gone.

Verse 2: The Justification
I ain’t got many friends left to talk to
Nowhere to run when I’m in trouble
When Josie’s gone, he doesn’t have anyone else.
He’s lonely and isolated, which is one of the reasons why he reached out to this woman.
You know I’d do anything for you
Stay the night but keep it undercover
He’s making promises he probably won’t keep.
The “keep it undercover” part is his real concern: Josie can’t find out.
Bridge: Nervous About What He’s Doing
Try to stop my hands from shakin’
‘Cause somethin’ in my mind’s not makin’ sense
I used to think this meant he was nervous because he’s long thought about hooking up with this woman, but that second line implies he’s nervous because he knows this is wrong.
At least part of him is questioning whether he should be doing this.
It’s been a while since we were all alone
I can’t hide the way I’m feelin’
They have some history, which makes this easier to pursue. Maybe she’s an ex?
Verse 3: After It’s Over
As you’re leaving, please, would you close the door?
Now that it’s done, she’s leaving.
This is another part I used to hear another way. I used to think she turned him down, but that doesn’t fully make sense with the rest of the lines.
And don’t forget what I told ya:
Just ’cause you’re right, that don’t mean I’m wrong
He’s reminding her to keep this secret.
She probably said this was a bad idea before they did it, and he’s defending himself: Even if she was right that it was risky, he wasn’t wrong for wanting her.
Another shoulder to cry upon
She’s now someone he can go to when he’s lonely.
He has her for comfort and sex when Josie’s not around.
“Your Love” Song Meaning: Cheating While the Girlfriend’s Away
“Your Love” is about a guy cheating on his girlfriend while she’s on vacation. He invites an older woman over, convincing her to sleep with him for one night while keeping it secret. He uses his loneliness as justification, explaining that when his girlfriend’s gone, he doesn’t have anyone else.
The song is about using loneliness to justify cheating. He knows it’s wrong, and he’s nervous about it, but he does it anyway because Josie’s gone and he doesn’t want to be alone.
The woman becomes someone he can turn to when he needs comfort, which was the point all along.

Final Thoughts
I think I heard “Your Love” over 50 times before I actually understood what it was about. It has one of the catchiest choruses in ’80s rock, which makes it easy to miss that it’s about a guy trying to cheat on his girlfriend.
