What Is “Tainted Love” About?
Verse 1: Needing to Get Away
Sometimes I feel I’ve got to
Run away I’ve got to
Get away
From the pain you drive into the heart of me
He wants out of the relationship because of the pain his partner causes him.
Something being driven into the heart usually calls to mind Cupid’s arrow, which makes people fall in love. Here it works the opposite way, since his partner’s causing him pain.
The love we share
Seems to go nowhere
The relationship has stalled.
They’re together, but it isn’t building toward anything, and he doesn’t expect that to change.
And I’ve lost my light
For I toss and turn, I can’t sleep at night
The relationship is costing him in multiple ways.
Losing his “light” means he’s been drained of his happiness.
Chorus: Nothing Left to Give
Once I ran to you
Now, I’ll run from you
The effort he once put into making the relationship work now goes into leaving.
His feelings may not be gone, but he knows he needs to get away now.
This tainted love you’ve given
I give you all a boy could give you
Calling the love “tainted” means it’s gone bad, like something that’s been poisoned.
He’s put in everything he has, so as far as he’s concerned, the damage comes from his partner’s side.
Take my tears and that’s not nearly all
Oh, tainted love
Tainted love
He’s cried over his partner, but he’s also probably put years of effort (and his life) into a relationship that didn’t end up working out.
It’s cost him a lot.
Verse 2: Refusing to Worship
Now, I know I’ve got to
Run away, I’ve got to
Get away
You don’t really want any more from me
He’s more certain now. What started as a feeling is now a decision.
His partner also clearly has one foot out the door, which makes staying pointless.
To make things right
You need someone to hold you tight
This could mean he thinks his partner just wants someone to hold them and make things feel better. If so, he’s only filling a role for them, which isn’t the kind of relationship he wants.
He could also be saying that “to make things right,” or to end things, his partner needs to find someone else.
And you think love is to pray
But I’m sorry, I don’t pray that way
His partner expects him to worship them, to be devoted to the point of being at their beck and call. He refuses to love that way.
Worth noting that Gloria Jones’s original uses play instead of pray. That version is about her treating love like a game, while this one is about devotion he won’t give.
Bridge: Leaving for Good
Don’t touch me, please
I cannot stand the way you tease
This probably means that his partner gives him just enough attention to keep him around.
He asks them to stop touching him because he can’t take it, and because it pulls him back when he’s trying to leave.
I love you, though you hurt me so
Now, I’m gonna pack my things and go
He still loves his partner, but the way he’s been hurt outweighs that.
Packing his things shows he’s done going back and forth and is actually leaving, not just thinking about it.
