But in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music, Alex Harvey said that he wrote it about his own mother, a free spirit from the Mississippi Delta who didn’t fit easily into small-town life.
When Harvey was a teenager, he asked her not to come watch him perform on TV because he was worried her drinking would embarrass him. That same night, she died in a car crash he came to believe was suicide.
The song came to him almost ten years later after what he described as a vision of his mother sitting in a rocking chair, laughing. He took it as her way of telling him it wasn’t his fault. He’s called the song both an apology and a gift to her.
